Progress Report: Using a projector is not super easy for patterns, but its do able

Learning about patterns.

I got my first pattern from simplicity and was kind of surprised to see it was printed on tissue. I’ve not learned why this is but to be honest I’m not a fan as I want that pattern to be something I can reuse again and again. Even initially the pattern had a small misprint on the tissue. So this lead me down the path of learning about patterns and more specifically the options around reusing patterns. One of the of the options that came up, PDFs and printing. Printing at the moment is my go to and I will likely keep with this for a few reasons.

You will want a dedicated space for projecting PDF patterns.

Having to calibrate your projector every time you want to make a cut is no fun. Sadly I don’t have a fully dedicated space for my craft at the moment. So this was the first real issue I learned when trying my projector out to see if I can use it for pattern cuts.

Calibrating a projector is do able but not fun.

I found currently the only real option for doing this reliably without a significant amount of work is to use https://www.patternprojector.com/en

I will say its a nice PWA (Progressive web app) for doing this but even it has some UX issues that makes the processes of calibration not something I want to do very often.

What I learned from attempting to project patterns.

• Depending on the projector you have you will need to be able to place it far enough way to make the usable space, usable. This means setting up a tripod on a table and projecting on to the floor or from some other far enough distance.
• You will want a cutting mat that you can use to aid calibration.
• You will want weighs or something to secure both the projector and fabrics from moving once you are setup.

Over all I loose any real advantage a projector gives me once I have to setup more than once. Thus printing is going to be my go, but I’m glad I gave it a try because once I get a more dedicated space it will be something worth looking into again.
